Tomorrow marks the end of my family’s Thanksgiving weekend. My dad has an unbelievably weird schedule, so he demanded we have Thanksgiving when he got home, on Friday. That’s fine with us, we thought. Two Thanksgivings?! SURE! Well, 2 Thanksgiving dinners, 1 leftover lunch, and 1 Clemson/Carolina game later, I feel like a hot-air balloon rising to my death! Today I am going to share the easiest and fastest ways to detox, de-bloat, and feel great in a few days following any huge indulgence.
1. Eat a breakfast complete of a variety of fruits and veggies, complex carbs, and nutrition!
Don’t skimp on breakfast the following morning after an indulgence. More importantly DO NOT eat a breakfast full of sugar, fat, oil, or simple carbs. For instance, it wouldn’t be such a great idea to eat a Krispie Kreme Donut, or even a spoonful of peanut butter. Instead, choose a variety of fruits and veggies with a reduced amount of complex carbs. Pretty much, eat CLEAN! The best thing you can do for your body right now is overload on vitamins and minerals, which are found most commonly in fruits and veggies. Here’s a list of some great breakfast ideas the day after a huge meal.
-100% Whole Grain English muffin topped with all-natural (I like to puree my own) peanut butter and sliced strawberries or banana.
– Glass of Unsweetened Almond, Rice, or Hemp Milk. (Please try to stay away from soy milk as it is now almost 100% Genetically Modified which could potentially be harmful to our bodies as well as being very harmful to the environment).
-Lean Green Smoothie or Juice.
2. Drink, Drink, Drink it down. And no, I do not mean alcohol or soda.
A great way to fight bloat is to drink as much water as humanly possible! Drink at least 64oz (2 Nalgene Bottles) throughout the day. I know what you’re thinking…That’s waaaay too much water for me to consume. Well, you don’t have to drink it all at once! In fact, if you start out your day by drinking 8oz, you could help fight bloat by not eating as much. If you aren’t a fan of water, no fret, you could also drink decaffeinated tea, hot water with lemon, soda water, or you could combine detoxing steps 2 and 3 together and make a “vitamin” water by using cut up cucumbers, blueberries, lemons and letting the fruit soak for about 30 minutes. One of my favorite detox drinks is a combination of 1 oz organic apple cider vinegar and 8 oz of water. It detoxes your body from within by balancing your pH levels.
3. Eat the Rainbow!
There may be a recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, but in my opinion, the more, the better. This is especially important if you want to detox or if you are transitioning to become a vegan or vegetarian. Remember, not all fruits and veggies are equal. Please, for my sake at least, don’t eat your veggies out of a can. Not only are they less nutritious due to added sugar and salt, they also may contain BPA and other harsh contaminates. In order to feel your best, eat a variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the few days of your detox. Try to eat the rainbow and try to go organic! Here’s a list of some of my favorite and MOST nutritious fruits and vegetables.
-Kale- dark leafy green that has more iron per calorie than beef. It also contains a ton of vitamins and minerals!
– Beets- dark purple and delicious! Beets contain phytonutrients and anti-oxidants that help the blood carry and deliver more oxygen. Beets are great detoxifying roots!
– Lemons- Lemons are seriously mother nature’s best friend. Lemons are great for clearing skin and detoxifying from within. Lemons are very alkaline, which helps the body maintain a balanced pH level.
-Garlic- garlic is great for detoxifying the liver and helps filter toxins in the digestive system!
4. Don’t Skimp on Meals.
I know what your thinking…If I skip meals, my body will eat its fat! or If I starve myself, I can lose weight. Nope. Not gonna happen. When you deprive your body of key nutrients, your body holds onto what you do eat more, causing more fat to build up. It also slows down your metabolism. The best thing you can do for your body is just eat clean and eat often. When your body is constantly digesting, it speeds up your metabolism and helps to get rid of toxins faster.
5. Eat less CRAP, eat more FOOD!
A- Artificial Sweeteners
P- Processed Junk
F-Fruits and Veggies
O- Organic Lean Proteins
O- Omega 3 Fatty Acids
D- Drink Water
6. Get out and get some fresh air!
Exercise is some of the best medicine out there. When you exercise for at least thirty minutes, your body already revs up its metabolism making it easier to pass toxins through your blood stream and digestive system. Not only is exercise a great way to detox, its also a great stress reliever after all of your family members wreck your house and embarrass the crap out of you for 3 days! Some of my favorite exercises include some basic yoga stretches, running, walking, nature hiking, or biking. Ahh, I can already feel the detox powers now!
These are only a few ways to clean up your body before you have to stuff yourself again for Christmas! If you follow these few tips, you could be feeling great in as little as 3 days and who knows, you could be on your way to being well all the time! There is nothing more important than feeling your best and giving your body what it deserves!
